Hi! I am in Oakland at the Community Food Conference presented by the Community Food Security Coalition. I’m extremely excited to be attending and be in Oakland, where there is so much energy involved in social and food justice! As well as being in town to witness Occupy Oakland.
There are two days of optional tours to start the conference, operated by Food Sovereignty Tours (part of Food First). Yesterday I chose to go to Berkeley on a trip called “Roots of Radicalism: Students Organizing for (Food) Justice.”
This tour will give you a look at the roots of Berkeley student radicalism and at the dynamic resurgence of student organizing in the last few years, to fight corporate control of public education and student spaces. You will tour the UC Berkeley campus and discuss how past student mobilizations inform current struggles. You will then visit the Berkeley Student Food Collective and Student Organic Gardens, and learn about specific student organizing to build a sustainable, and student-owned, campus food system.
Rather than tell you about it, I’ll just leave you with some pictures.
Roots of Radicalism
Today I went on another trip, this one titled Oakland Food Justice: Building Community, Growing our Movement that was amazing! More pictures tomorrow!
